This month was full of triumph and trials. Hmmmm…bad news or good news first??? Let’s start with the bad and end on a good note.
In a nutshell, Joseph has been sick with an ear infection and flu. The flu had us in the ER all-night twice, but he is now fine. It turns out after having the flu for a week his digestive system just needed help getting his metabolism back up. My skinny boy is now putting weight back on and eating like a horse, nonstop.

This experience was the first time Mike and I felt helpless as parents. Our son was not feeling well and there was nothing we could do to make him feel better. He was a trooper. We learned how strong and how much Joseph could endure at such a young age.
Our lesson learned from this whole experience:

Yesterday Mike and I celebrated our 4 year anniversary. 9 years together, 4 years of marriage and it has been an amazing time that has gone by soooooo fast!

First of all, welcome to the world Abigail Ann Jenson! We are excited about the new addition and can’t wait to hear the stories as she grows. As we are finding out, it goes so fast. Love you Abby!
Also welcome to the world Kyra Marie Griffin. We hope to meet you this summer!
Joseph got his first haircut! I promised Mike I would cut his curls off after his first birthday. In keeping with this condition, Mike turned the shears loose after the party ended – I helped too! It wasn’t perfect, but still turned out cute. I was nervous about how he would look, but I actually prefer it short now. It helped him move from the baby look into the little boy look. I really like it. He will have curly hair just like his Uncle Joe - his hair is starting to grow back with curls.
Joseph has started to become daddy’s boy. There are many times he now prefers his daddy to his mommy. He used to have a hard time with Mike putting him to bed. And, now he loves it and there are times he goes down better for daddy than mommy. Even yesterday in the car he was sitting in the back pointing out the window at trucks saying “Daddy”
Joseph also decided to take a quick trip from his crib to the floor. All of a sudden Mike and I heard and big THUD followed by crying. Running into his room I found Joseph on the floor. Little stinker. I guess it is pay back since I was a young crib jumper as well. My mom and dad had to take me out of a crib at a pretty young age. How he climbed out, we have no idea!!! Thank goodness we had one more level to lower his crib. After this he will be in a bed. I hope this isn’t a prediction of his future as a sky diver!?!?!
We have a new word. Joseph enjoys saying “Thank you,” when you give him something. It really sounds like “Tay Q”, and is more shouted explosively through a huge grin than said, but that is close enough for me.
Brian and Becca get ready. Joseph has his dancing shoes on for your wedding!!! He has started to dance. He has perfected two dances. His “Stevie Wonder head sway” and his “Bone-Jangles” tap-dance. Oh my goodness…TOO CUTE!
Joseph’s birthday party went really well. We decided to just have family for his first birthday. I’m actually glad, as just family was even overwhelming for him. All Grandmas and Grandpas were there, my brothers and families. Joseph had some great present helpers, as his cousins helped him opened his presents. Thank you Colton, Molly, and Emily. And, thank you all for your thoughtfulness on his special day. He was spoiled!!!
I’ve taken on my Mom’s tradition of making special B-day cakes. The one thing I remember growing up was the theme cakes my mom used to make for our birthdays. This year I made my first cake, a bear. I did have some help from both my mom and mom Begley. Thank you. I think it turned out pretty good…and yes…Joseph thought it was pretty tasty!
Grandma and Grandpa. came out to visit for Joseph’s first birthday. It was nice to have them here. I enjoyed the break and they enjoyed the babysitting. They taught him a few new tricks. Believe it or not, Grandma taught Joseph to head-butt!!! She taught him an old Spanish childhood game she knows that is used to teach a child about hands, fingers, counting, and the finale is the head! “Tope Borrego” (bump the lamb) where you lightly bump heads,
Well, Joseph threw the entire game out the window and wanted only to bump heads (hard). So, if you are ever face-to-face with him and he head butts you, just know it is out of love. They also taught him to go around the house saying chooo chooo, but it come out as “gee gee gee gee gee” (and then he stomps around the house) and the smile on his face is priceless.
Mother’s Day was awesome! We took our camper out for a test drive (oh yeah, we bought a camper. I’ll tell you about that next).
We had a pic-nic about a mile behind our house with a view of Pikes Peak. Then we had a ‘Joseph sized’ hike. Joseph did not like it much as the grass grows in mounds here and it makes the ground uneven. So, it lasted about 5 minutes! But, it is a start towards the hikes we are going to take when he gets older.
Ok, the camper. Mike and I have been looking for a camper for quite some time. We just haven’t found the right one - at the right price. The week before Mike left for Alaska we found one for sale that sort of fell into our laps. This is where we will be living this summer.
Oh yeah, Mike went to Alaska for work – still convincing him we don’t need to move there just yet. You think Minnesota has mosquitoes and cold?!?! This is like Minnesota bugs and weather magnified by 100 as we would have to move the Alaskan interior! It is a beautiful place and that makes it somewhat tempting. Mike should have been born 100 years ago and married to a fur-trader ;)

I feel like I’ve already written too much, but so much has happened!!! For sure, this is enough to catch everyone up on the past month though. I’m sure I’ve missed a thing or two to mention, but these were the main events. Oh! One more thing, Joseph now has 4 teeth…his 4 front teeth!
Happy Birthday to Abigail and My MOM, Kyra Griffin!!! There should also be a baby Johnson born in the next few days…an early congrats to Carrie and Dave.

Well, my May prediction has proven to be wrong. On April fools day he walked from the middle of the living room to the couch…TWICE. And, for his April fools joke, he didn’t walk again the rest of the day! “April fools you thought I was going to walk!” Every day he walks more and more. These days he rarely crawls. Lately he is trying to run to get there faster and he usually ends up throwing himself across the room. Last night Daddy gave Joseph his first sound parental words of wisdom, ”Walk before you run, Boy”.
Joseph enjoys walking with assistance. He has a pushcart that he can literally run while pushing. Everyone says he will walk any day now, but I’m still predicting May as his walking month. I don’t know why I say May, but it’s the month that is stuck in my head. We will see if I’m right!
Back home again for a few days and then off again to my Mom and Gary’s house. Their new house fits them to a ‘T’. It is everything they were looking for. Plus, for me I felt very 
It is Easter weekend and we are going to have a down weekend and just enjoy being together as a family. I have the Easter baskets made and we will dye the eggs today. Those pictures will most likely come in the next blog. Happy Easter!
